Peru: Healthcare workers plan open-ended strike nationwide from Jan. 13

Public healthcare workers affiliated with the Peruvian Medical Federation (FMP) plan to launch an open-ended strike nationwide, starting from Jan. 13. The work stoppage was ratified after workers failed to reach an agreement with the Ministry of Health (MINSA) on several demands, including improved working conditions amid the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, higher salaries and public health budget, and the resignation of the Health Minister Pilar Mazzetti.

Leaders of the FMP have assured that emergency services, intensive care, and the treatment of COVID-19 patients will continue during the strike. Disruptions to nonemergency surgeries and appointments, however, are likely. Increased demand for care may disrupt services at private facilities.

Although participants have not announced demonstrations, small-scale gatherings are possible, especially outside hospitals and other medical facilities, as well as government buildings, especially in Lima. Health-related agitations in the capital have previously occurred outside the MINSA building and similar demonstrations are possible. Major violence is unlikely; however, the possibility of isolated skirmishes cannot be discounted.

Confirm medical appointments at medical facilities for the duration of the strike. Be prepared for some delays. Follow all security personnel instructions. Avoid all protests.
