Increased security likely near Qalandiya checkpoint in West Bank following attempted stabbing attack on Israeli border guard Jan. 12.

Informational

Event

Increased security is likely in the vicinity of the Qalandiya checkpoint between Jerusalem and Ramallah following an attempted stabbing attack on Jan. 12. Israeli security forces disarmed and inflicted minor injuries on a Palestinian assailant who had reportedly attempted to stab an Israeli border police officer at the checkpoint; the officer sustained minor wounds. Police are investigating the circumstances of the incident.

Authorities may close the checkpoint to traffic as they have done following previous similar incidents. Localized transport disruptions are likely in the area through Jan. 12 as authorities investigate the incident.

Advice

Heed the advice of authorities, including officers at security checkpoints. Seek updated information on security conditions and possible movement restrictions in the West Bank and East Jerusalem before traveling. Do not attempt to bypass a security checkpoint; even an accidental breach of the security cordon near a checkpoint may prompt Israeli security forces to respond aggressively.
