Protests possible across the US, especially in state capitals, through at least Jan. 20. Heightened security likely. Clashes possible.

Warning

Event

Authorities in the US are deploying increased security at sensitive locations nationwide through at least Jan. 20 - the date of the US presidential inauguration - amid a heightened potential for demonstrations and unrest. According to federal law enforcement officials, various groups are planning to gather at all 50 state capitol buildings and the US Capitol in Washington, DC, in the lead-up to and through President-elect Joe Biden's inauguration. Authorities warn that some of the participants may carry firearms. Other potential protest sites include state and federal courthouses and statehouses. Officials believe that a gathering may occur in Washington, DC, Jan. 16; however, they have yet to release details concerning dates, times, or specific locations for the action or other related protests.

Significant deployments of police and security forces are likely in all state capital cities, especially after the Jan. 6 violence at the US Capitol Building in Washington, DC. Several states have announced the deployment of National Guard units to provide additional security near government buildings. Authorities may close roads as part of the security measures, which are likely to cause localized transport disruptions. Clashes between police and protesters and between groups of rival activists are possible.

Advice

Strictly heed the instructions of security personnel. Avoid all protests as a precaution. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a non-governmental building.
