Chad: Authorities ban planned nationwide Feb. 4-7 opposition protests
Authorities in Chad ban planned nationwide gatherings Feb. 4-7. Protests remain possible during this period.
Event
Authorities in Chad have banned planned nationwide demonstrations according to a directive signed Feb. 1. The edict follows plans by opposition political groups to protest in the capital, N'Djamena, and in several other locations across the country Jan. 4-7. Several opposition groups, such as the Transformateurs movement, have stated that events will go ahead. This group's event is scheduled to begin at 0900 Feb. 6; however, details on a start location remain unclear. Demonstrations had been called against plans by President Idriss Deby to run for a sixth term in the upcoming April 11 elections. The Ministry of Public Security has stated the events have been banned to maintain public order across the country.
Authorities have instructed security forces to enforce the ban gatherings, and large security contingents have been reported in N'Djamena as of Feb. 3. Security forces may attempt to disperse participants using force if the events proceed. Transport disruptions are also possible in the vicinity of all demonstrations.
Context
Deby is likely to be announced as the Patriotic Salvation Movement's candidate for the upcoming presidential vote Feb. 6. Deby is 68 years old and has been the ruler of Chad for 30 years. Ahead of the elections, opposition parties have expressed interest in forming a coalition against Deby. However, such a move would require the parties to move beyond longstanding divisions and ethnic interests.
Advice
Avoid all planned demonstrations as a routine security precaution and to mitigate potential disruptions. Monitor for updates on possible protest locations and allow additional time for travel in large cities and towns from Jan. 4. Heed the instructions of local security personnel.
