Chad: Nationwide indefinite public sector strike ongoing as of Feb. 4 /update 1

Union des Syndicats du Tchad maintains nationwide indefinite strike across Chad as of Feb. 4. Protests possible.

Warning

Event

An indefinite nationwide strike led by the Union des Syndicats du Tchad, which started Jan. 11, is reportedly ongoing as of Feb. 4. The union, which itself represents other public sector unions, called the stoppage to protest the perceived failure of the government to act on a memorandum agreed to by the government and public workers. Affected sectors include hospitals, schools, and public administration services.

The strike will likely continue to affect nonemergency health services at all government clinics and hospitals. Facilities may continue to provide emergency and COVID-19 treatment; however, it should be noted that public health services, already affected by the spread of the virus, may be limited for the duration of the stoppage. Increased demand could disrupt services at private facilities.

Despite restrictions on gatherings and public services due to COVID-19, associated demonstrations remain possible outside government buildings in N'Djamena and in regions outside the capital. Police will probably deploy to monitor demonstrations should they materialize. Clashes are likely in the event of any demonstrations. Traffic disruptions are likely near large gatherings.

Advice

Monitor for updates on the stoppage. Avoid any protests as a standard precaution. If operating or traveling near protest locations, allow additional time to reach destinations due to the potential for localized transport disruptions. Confirm all appointments at medical facilities for the duration of the strike. Be prepared for delays at hospitals; call in advance if possible as conditions will likely vary at different facilities.
