Event
Authorities are responding to a chemical spill on Thames Street in the Pandora industrial area of Napier, the evening of Feb. 5. Officials evacuated nearby businesses and warned people to avoid the Ahuriri Estuary until further notice. Authorities have also warned residents against swimming in nearby waters, including Pandora Pond, until at least the afternoon of Feb. 7. There were no immediate reports of injuries.
An increased security presence will probably continue near the incident site in the coming hours. Thames Street is closed, and localized transport and business disruptions are likely to continue until crews clean the spill and investigate the incident.
Advice
Avoid the area. Strictly follow the instructions of authorities. Plan for localized operational and shipping disruptions. If avoidance of the site is not possible, protect the airway by covering both mouth and nose, as well as shielding the eyes. Cover all exposed skin to prevent chemical particles and droplets from settling and causing irritation.
