Authorities are responding to a chemical spill on Thames Street in the Pandora industrial area of Napier, the evening of Feb. 5. Officials discovered the spill at around 1540 during routine survey work. Reports indicate that approximately 1,000 liters (264 gallons) of hydrochloric acid spilled in the area. Officials evacuated nearby businesses and warned people to avoid the Ahuriri Estuary until further notice. Authorities have also warned residents against swimming in nearby waters, including Pandora Pond, until at least the afternoon of Feb. 7. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

An increased security presence will probably continue near the incident site in the coming hours. Thames Street is closed, and localized transport and business disruptions are likely to continue until crews clean the spill and investigate the incident.
