Venezuela: Anti-government protests to take place in several cities nationwide Feb. 12

Students and opposition activists to demonstrate in several cities across Venezuela, Feb. 12, to mark National Youth Day.

Warning

Event

Various political opposition parties and student organizations, including the Student Confederation of Venezuela, plan to demonstrate in several cities across Venezuela on Feb. 12 to demand improved conditions and free elections in the country. The actions coincide with the nation's observance of National Youth Day - a day that typically sees significant demonstrations, particularly by student groups.

The largest protest will likely occur in Caracas, with activists planning to gather at Plaza Bolivar in the municipality of Chacao starting at 0900. Other confirmed protest sites are:

  • Barquisimeto: Teatro Juarez, starting at 0900

  • Maracaibo: Museo Arte Contemporaneo, starting at 0800

  • Merida: Plaza Bolivar, starting at 1030

Protests are also likely in other cities, especially Valencia, Puerto La Cruz, Puerto Ordaz, and San Cristobal. The largest demonstrations could draw thousands of participants. Clashes between activists and police occur frequently in Venezuela and are likely to erupt Feb. 12, especially if demonstrators attempt to block roads or march near government buildings. Transport and business disruptions are likely near protest sites.

Advice

Avoid all protests. Allow additional time to reach destinations in major cities. Do not attempt to cross any protester roadblocks; wait for police to clear the way before proceeding. Leave the area immediately at the first sign of any confrontation or violence.
