Ecuador: Municipal leaders plan to protest in Quito March 9

Municipal association calls for a march to Carondelet Palace in Quito, Ecuador, at 1000 March 9. Tight security, disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Mayors and leaders affiliated with the Association of Municipalities of Ecuador (Asociacion de Municipalidades del Ecuador, AME) plan to march from Parque del Arbolito to Carondelet Palace in Quito, from 1000 March 9. The action is to demand the national government pay its debts owed to local councils, among other demands. The event is likely to draw large crowds.

Police will probably deploy to monitor the protest and may attempt to prevent the marchers from reaching the government palace as they did during a related march in December, when the protesters broke through the police fencing. While major violence is unlikely at the upcoming event, minor confrontations are possible if police again attempt to block the demonstrators. Localized traffic disruptions are likely along the march route and around Carondelet Palace.

Advice

Avoid all protests. Heed the directives of authorities. If violence breaks out nearby, leave the area immediately and seek shelter in a secure location. Allow additional time if operating in the affected parts of Quito March 9.
