Ecuador: Transport workers to stage nationwide vehicular protests March 2
Transporters to hold nationwide vehicular protests on bus routes in Ecuador March 2. Localized traffic disruptions are likely.
Event
Drivers for the National Federation of School and Institutional Transportation of Ecuador (Federacion Nacional de Transporte Escolar e Institucional del Ecuador, FENATEIE) have called for nationwide protests starting at 1200 March 2. The action is to demand that drivers be permitted to work in other sectors, as schools have been closed under the nation's COVID-19 restrictions and drivers have not been able to work. Drivers intend to carry out their protests in their vehicles on major thoroughfares in cities nationwide. In Quito, protesters also intend to gather at the intersection of Avenida Amazonas and Union Nacional de Periodistas for a press briefing at 1300, which may cause some localized disruptions.
Police may deploy to monitor the protests and possibly enforce road closures to facilitate the larger vehicular rallies. Significant violence is unlikely. Major disruptions are likely near the protests, especially if demonstrators use their vehicles to block roads or stage go-slows.
Advice
Avoid all protests. Do not attempt to cross any roadblocks. Allow extra time to reach destinations in major cities of Ecuador March 2.
