Malawi: Municipal elections to take place in several constituencies March 30

Authorities to hold municipal elections in nine locations across Malawi March 30. Campaigns, protests, and other electoral events likely.

Warning

Event

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) announced municipal by-elections would occur in seven constituencies and two wards March 30. The impacted locations are listed below:

  • Nsanje Central Constituency

  • Nsanje North Constituency

  • Chikwawa East Constituency

  • Ntchisi North Constituency

  • Zomba Changalume Constituency

  • Lilongwe Msinja South Constituency

  • Karonga North West Constituency

  • Ward: Liviridzi in Balaka West Constituency

  • Ward: Chitakale in Mulanje South Constituency

Out of the seven constituencies, the High Court nullified three results, while four others became vacant due to deaths.

While widespread unrest is unlikely, associated demonstrations remain possible, including at or near polling stations before, during, and after the poll. Large crowds could lead to ground travel disruptions near these sites. Transport and business disruptions may occur near larger voting stations. Election events will probably be smaller than in past years' programs due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Advice

Avoid any election events, and exercise caution near election committee offices, party offices, and polling stations in the coming weeks. Seek updated information from local sources for updates on election events as organizers may not announce details in advance. Use alternative routes to avoid election-related events; allow additional time to reach destinations. If any violence erupts nearby, immediately depart the area and seek shelter at a non-governmental building. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
