Nepal: Air pollution forecast to continue in most areas of Nepal through at least April 2

Air pollution forecast to continue in most areas of Nepal through at least April 2. Schools closed. Transport disruptions possible.

Warning

Event

Severe air pollution is forecast to continue in most areas of Nepal in the coming days. As of late March 30, PM 10 air pollution (airborne particulate matter with a diameter of 10 microns or smaller - small enough to penetrate the lungs) was above 150, or "very bad," at most monitoring stations nationwide. Air pollution has been especially severe in the Kathmandu Valley, Pokhara, and areas of western Nepal. Officials have suspended in-person classes at schools nationwide through April 2. Authorities could issue transport and industrial restrictions in some areas.

Reduced visibility may cause transport disruptions. Flight delays are possible at airports nationwide, including Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM), especially during overnight and early morning hours when relative humidity is high. Traffic disruptions resulting from inadequate visibility are also possible on highways and secondary roads.

Advice

Monitor local air quality index reports. Revisit contingency plans, including telecommuting options, in the event of significant air pollution. Confirm all transport reservations. Drive cautiously, and allow extra time to reach destinations due to low visibility and road congestion. Individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions should carry adequate medication and consult with a physician prior to travel. Stay indoors in well-ventilated areas whenever possible, and seek medical attention if respiratory symptoms worsen. Eye irritation is possible; flush irritated eyes with copious amounts of clean water.
