Peru: Truck drivers to launch nationwide strike March 15
Truck drivers to launch indefinite nationwide strike in Peru March 15. Transport disruptions likely; protests possible.
Event
Truck drivers affiliated with the National Union of Transporters and Drivers (Gremio Nacional de Transportistas y Conductores, GNTC) have called for an indefinite nationwide strike in Peru starting March 15. The action is over failed dialogue efforts with the government on various labor-related grievances linked to operating costs and fuel and toll costs, among others.
Truck drivers may stage protests as part of the industrial action, which could include the blocking of roads, as they have done in the past. Protesters could blockade the Pan-American Highway (Highway 1), which connects the north and south of the country along the coast. Police will almost certainly deploy to monitor all large protests, especially on highways near major urban centers. Clashes are possible if police attempt to clear roadblocks or if other drivers attempt to traverse the roadblocks.
Ground freight transport disruptions are likely for the duration of the strike. Severe supply chain disruptions are unlikely unless the strike becomes protracted. The availability of essential goods may only be impacted should the strike last longer.
Advice
Avoid all protests and do not attempt to cross any protest blockades. Plan accordingly for potential ground freight transport disruptions; consider alternate shipping methods for critical cargos. Plan for potential localized and inter-provincial transit and traffic disruptions.
