Critical

Event

Authorities have enacted several nationwide restrictions following the death of President Idriss Deby Itno, which was announced April 20. A nationwide curfew is in force from 18:00-05:00; however, its duration is unclear. Authorities have also closed all land and maritime borders. Parliament has been dissolved and a transitional council led by Deby's son, General Mahmud Deby Itno, has reportedly been formed. The president's death reportedly comes after he sustained injuries while on operations against Le Front pour l'Alternance et la Concorde au Tchad (FACT) rebel group in the north of the country, April 18-19.

An increased security presence is almost certain in major cities and towns as interim authorities decide a course of action following the president's death. Clashes against the FACT armed group are also likely to continue in northern areas of the country.
