International energy firm, Total, declared force majeure on some of its projects in the Cabo Delgado region, April 26. As a consequence, the firm has stated that all personnel will be withdrawn from the Mozambique Liquid Natural Gas project site in Afungi. The decision to withdraw follows the steady deterioration in the security environment in the greater region since 2017.

More than 2,500 people have been killed in violence in the Cabo Delgado region since 2017. In an attack in March 2021, dozens of people, including foreign workers, were killed after militants linked to the Islamic State group attacked the town of Palma.
