Nepal: Severe air pollution likely to continue in most areas nationwide through at least mid-April; flight disruptions reported /update 1
Severe air pollution likely to continue in most of Nepal through at least mid-April. Flight disruptions reported. Restrictions possible.
Event
Severe air pollution will likely continue in most areas of Nepal through at least mid-April. As of late April 6, PM 10 air pollution (airborne particulate matter with a diameter of 10 microns or smaller - small enough to penetrate the lungs) was above 150, or "very bad," at most monitoring stations nationwide. Air pollution has been especially severe in the Kathmandu Valley and Pokhara. Authorities have said they may impose restrictions on industrial production, construction, and vehicle operations in the coming days. School closures are also possible.
Reduced visibility will likely continue to prompt flight disruptions at airports in affected areas. Flight delays have recently been reported at airports serving Kathmandu (KTM) and Pokhara (PKR). Further flight disruptions are especially likely during overnight and early morning hours when relative humidity is high. Traffic disruptions resulting from inadequate visibility are also possible on highways and secondary roads.
Advice
Monitor local air quality index reports. Revisit contingency plans, including telecommuting options, in the event of significant air pollution. Confirm all transport reservations. Drive cautiously and allow extra time to reach destinations due to low visibility and road congestion. Individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions should carry adequate medication and consult with a physician prior to travel. Stay indoors in well-ventilated areas whenever possible, and seek medical attention if respiratory symptoms worsen. Eye irritation is possible; flush irritated eyes with copious amounts of clean water.
