New Zealand: Anzac Day commemorative events planned at locations nationwide April 25

New Zealand to commemorate Anzac Day nationwide April 25. Tight security, localized disruptions likely around official events.

Informational

Event

Anzac Day events will take place across New Zealand April 25. The holiday honors fallen members of Australian and New Zealand military forces, and especially service members who fought in the Gallipoli campaign in Turkey during World War One. Early morning services are scheduled to take place at the following locations, among others:

  • Auckland: Auckland War Memorial Museum

  • Wellington: Pukeahu National War Memorial Park

  • Christchurch: Cranmer Square

Tight security measures and localized traffic disruptions are likely around major commemorative events, particularly in large cities. Road closures will be imposed around many of the event venues. Increased demand for public transport is possible as people travel to official services. Some planned events may be downsized or postponed due to COVID-19 concerns.

Since the annual Anzac Day falls on a Sunday this year, an official public holiday will be observed throughout New Zealand on Monday 26. Many nonessential businesses and government offices will be closed.

Advice

Unless attending commemorative services, consider avoiding event venues due to increased security and transport disruptions. Confirm transport status before embarking on travel; allow additional time to reach destinations, especially if operating near affected locations.
