Peru: Indefinite strike to begin April 5 in Melgar Province

Locals from the Llallimayo Basin area of Melgar Province, Puno Department, composed of the districts of Ayavir, Cupi, Llalli, and Umachiri, will launch an indefinite strike and hold protests beginning April 5. While strike organizers have not said where demonstrations will be held, protests blocking Highway 3S, especially where it links Puno Department with Cusco Department, are likely. Clashes between demonstrators and police cannot be ruled out, especially if police attempt to forcibly disperse protests.

Context

The strike is in reaction to what locals say is pollution of the area caused by mining activity, and past anti-pollution activism in the area has led to demonstrators blocking roads.
