Authorities declare a curfew from 23:00 April 18 - 06:00 April 19 in Brooklyn Center, Minn., US amid ongoing protest activity.

Critical

Event

Authorities in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota issued a curfew from 23:00 April 18 - 06:00 April 19 as demonstrations continued for the eighth straight day. A 23:00-04:00 curfew remains in effect for Champlin April 16-18 amid protest activity. Demonstrations began April 11 after a fatal officer-involved shooting in the nearby town of Brooklyn Center. Large gatherings have occurred near the headquarters of the Brooklyn Center Police Department at 6645 North Humboldt Avenue, as well as in the vicinity of the shooting at the corner of 63rd North and Lee North avenues. Reports indicate looting at several businesses during the disturbances, leading authorities to deploy the National Guard and Minnesota State Police.

Unannounced demonstrations may occur throughout the Minneapolis/Saint Paul Metropolitan area. Authorities will maintain an elevated security posture, particularly in commercial zones. Clashes between protesters and officers are possible, especially if police attempt to disperse unruly crowds forcibly or if protesters refuse to observe curfews. Associated transport and business disruptions are likely.

Additionally, a large security operation has been ongoing in Minneapolis due to the trial of Derek Chauvin, a former city police officer facing murder charges in the 2020 death of George Floyd.

Advice

If operating in the greater Minneapolis/Saint Paul area, exercise increased caution and situational awareness. Avoid any protests that may materialize due to the potential for clashes; keep away from any areas where large numbers of security personnel appear to be deploying. Seek alternative routes to circumvent any known demonstration sites. Carry identification documents and remain courteous and cooperative if approached and questioned by law enforcement personnel. Heed instructions of the authorities.
