Burkina Faso: Unidentified assailants kill at least 15 people in Oudalan Province, May 18-19

Event

Unidentified assailants killed at least 15 civilians and injured one other in the village of Adjararay located at around 7 km (4 miles) from Tin-Akoff (also known as Calcaire), Oudalan Province, overnight May 18-19. Security officials said that the attack took place during a religious service. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. Tin-Akoff is located around 10 km (6 miles) south of the Malian border.

Security forces may deploy to the impact area following the violence. Additional violence is also likely in this region of Burkina Faso.

Context

The raid underscores the severe insecurity and risk of militant attacks across northern Burkina Faso. Furthermore, Islamist militants operating in the tri-border area (Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso) continue to perpetrate similar attacks and are usually the primary suspects. Armed bandits have also contributed to the deteriorating security environment.
