Chad: Activists to stage pro-government demonstration in N'Djamena on May 12
Pro-government activists to march in N'Djamena, Chad, May 12. Tight security, clashes possible.
Event
The New Vision Platform, an umbrella group encompassing a number of political parties and civil society organizations, plan to stage a march in central N'Djamena on May 12. The purpose of the event is to show support for the Transitional Military Council (CMT) that has been governing Chad since the April 19 death of President Idriss Deby. Activists will march from the Hamama Roundabout to the January 15 Palace, probably primarily along Boulevard Francois Tombalbaye; organizers have not announced a specific start time for the event. It remains unclear how many participants the demonstration may draw.
Authorities will almost certainly maintain an elevated security posture along the march route. Increased security measures, such as roadblocks and additional checkpoints, could prompt localized transport disruptions. Although organizers intend the demonstration to be peaceful and authorities have granted permission for the march to take place, clashes cannot be ruled out, particularly if rival groups of activists attempt to rally nearby.
Context
Chad's political and security environments have degraded in the past three weeks following the death of longtime President Idriss Deby Itno. The appointment of the late president's son, Mahamat Deby Itno, as the head of the transitional military council, along with the suspension of the constitution and the National Assembly, sparked nationwide protests on April 27, during which at least five activists died in clashes with security forces.
Advice
Avoid the area of the march, as well as any large concentrations of police on May 12. Allow extra time to reach nearby destinations. Leave the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Strictly heed the instructions of local authorities.
