Chad: Civil society group to hold nationwide demonstrations, May 19
Activist group in Chad calls for nationwide demonstrations, May 19. Tight security, clashes likely.
Event
Political opposition and civil society groups led by the "Wakit Tama" movement plan to hold nationwide demonstrations, May 19, to condemn Chad's transitional military council (CMT). Wakit Tama is calling on supporters to stage peaceful marches to demand the return to constitutional government. While organizers have as yet announced no specific locations or times for the rallies, the largest gatherings will probably take place in prominent public squares and near government offices in N'Djamena. The events could draw large crowds.
Authorities will almost certainly maintain an elevated security posture near any demonstrations that materialize. Increased security measures, such as roadblocks and additional checkpoints, are likely in major urban areas and will probably prompt localized transport disruptions. Clashes between protesters and security forces are likely due to heightened political tensions.
Context
Chad's political and security environments have degraded in the past three weeks following the death of longtime President Idriss Deby Itno. The appointment of the late president's son, Mahamat Deby Itno, as the head of the transitional military council (CMT), along with the suspension of the constitution and the National Assembly, sparked nationwide protests on April 27, during which at least five activists died in clashes with security forces. Additional protests have occurred in recent days, including May 8. Anti-government civil society groups and opposition parties are seeking to increase the pressure on the CMT to usher in a democratic transition.
Advice
Avoid all demonstrations and large concentrations of police if traveling in Chad, and especially N'Djamena, May 19. Seek updated information on route and destination security and road conditions before conducting ground movements. Leave the area immediately if crowds form or violence occurs. Strictly heed the instructions of local security personnel.
