Ethiopia: Militant group makes unsubstantiated claim of kidnapping three Chinese mine workers in Mendi, Oromia Region, during mid-May

Authorities in Ethiopia's West Welega Zone deny militant group's May 15 claim of kidnapping three Chinese mine workers in Mendi.

Informational

Event

Authorities in the Oromia Region's West Welega Zone have denied claims that the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) had recently abducted three foreign mine workers. On May 15, the OLA announced on social media that it had kidnapped three Chinese nationals in the village of Mendi. According to the OLA's statement, the individuals were engaged in mining operations in the area. However, the group gave no indication of when the individuals were taken or the mining company by which they were employed. Local officials, on the other hand, assert that no foreign nationals had been taken hostage and no investment licenses have been issued to Chinese nationals to engage in mining in the area. The Chinese embassy in Addis Ababa has as yet issued no statement concerning the matter.

Regardless of whether or not the OLA's claim proves to be true, the threat of kidnapping will likely remain high in Oromia Region over the near term.

Advice

Exercise a high degree of vigilance due to the threat of kidnapping in Oromia Region. Do not discuss plans and routes publicly. If operating in the area in the long term, vary routes and times of travel and ensure the use of secure transport.
