Warning

Event

Further protests are likely in Siguiri through mid-May in response to COVID-19 restrictions on religious events. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces were reported in Siguiri overnight May 3/4 to protest a decision from authorities banning nightly events in mosques for the last ten days of Ramadan. Police reportedly used tear gas to disperse participants who then erected roadblocks around the city, resulting in transportation demonstrations.

An increased security presence is likely to remain in the town in the coming days. Further protests and related clashes are likely. Transport disruptions are also likely in the vicinity of all gatherings.

Advice

Avoid demonstrations and large concentrations of police if traveling in Siguiri. Seek updated information on route and destination security and road conditions before conducting ground movements. Leave the area immediately if crowds form or violence occurs.
