Japan: Dust storm forecast to bring significant air pollution May 8-9

Dust storm forecast to bring significant air pollution to parts of Japan May 8-9. Reduced visibility likely, transport disruptions possible.

Informational

Event

Significant air pollution is forecast to affect most of Japan May 8-9 as winds bring dust eastward from mainland Asia. While reduced air quality and visibility will likely be most severe in western Japan, impacts are possible nationwide. Visibility may be reduced to under 5 km (3 miles) in some locations. Conditions are likely to improve significantly in most areas from early May 9.

Reduced visibility may cause transport disruptions. Flight delays are possible at airports in affected areas, including Fukuoka Airport (FUK), especially during overnight and early morning hours when relative humidity is high. Traffic disruptions resulting from inadequate visibility are also possible on highways and secondary roads.

Advice

Observe local air quality index reports. Confirm all transport reservations. Drive cautiously, and allow extra time to reach destinations in areas with low visibility. If air quality significantly deteriorates, stay indoors in well-ventilated areas whenever possible, and seek medical attention if any respiratory symptoms worsen. Eye irritation is possible; flush irritated eyes with copious amounts of clean water.
