Authorities in Mozambique extend and revise COVID-19 state of public calamity from May 27 through late June; curfew hours reduced.

As of May 27, authorities have extended and revised the nationwide state of public calamity through at least late June in response to COVID-19 activity. Under the new edict, the nationwide curfew will be shortened by one hour from 22:00-04:00 to 23:00-04:00. Pre-school academic activities are allowed to resume with strict adherence to health measures.

Officials are also implementing the following measures through June 30:

  • All commercial establishments are permitted to open from 09:00-19:00 Monday through Saturday, and 09:00-18:00 on Sunday. Restaurants may remain open through 20:00 every day.

  • Stores selling alcoholic beverages may operate from 09:00 to 17:00 Monday through Saturday, remaining closed on Sundays and public holidays.

  • Religious services, conferences, meetings, and religious celebrations may be held at 30 percent venue capacity or at a maximum of 50 people in closed venues and 100 people in open spaces.

  • All social events remain prohibited throughout the country, apart from weddings, which are only permitted to have 20 attendees.

  • Government events must not exceed 100 participants.

  • Large and medium-size gymnasiums are permitted to operate at a maximum of 40 percent capacity and 20 percent capacity, respectively.

International Travel
International commercial flights are operating in the country. All international travelers arriving in Mozambique must present a negative result from a COVID-19 polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test taken no more than 72 hours before departure to Mozambique. Children under 11 years old are exempt from providing COVID-19 PCR test results. For travelers arriving in Mozambique via land border crossings, the negative test result remains valid for 14 days for those who require multiple entries over a short period of time or who are leaving the country for a short time. Passengers who test positive upon arrival in the country or fail to provide a negative test result must self-quarantine for 14 days. Those who provide a negative test result are exempt from the quarantine regulation.

All restrictions are subject to amendment at short notice in response to government reviews. Security forces have been deployed to ensure compliance.

Advice

Follow all official instructions. Abide by national health and safety measures. Reconfirm all travel arrangements and requirements before departing. Consider delaying traveling if experiencing symptoms associated with COVID-19, as they may prompt increased scrutiny and delays. Liaise with trusted contacts for further updates and guidance. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation. Ensure contingency plans account for further disruptive measures or extensions of current restrictions.
