New Zealand: Activists plan pro-Palestinian protests in multiple cities May 15 /update 1
Palestinian solidarity activists plan protests in most major cities in New Zealand May 15. Increased security likely.
Event
Palestinian solidarity groups have planned gatherings in multiple cities May 15. Participants intend to mark “Nakba Day”, which commemorates the displacement of thousands of Palestinians by Israeli forces in 1948, along with extending support to Palestinians amid ongoing regional violence. Organizers have announced protests at the following locations and starting times:
Auckland: March from Britomart Railway Station to Viaduct Basin, 14:00
Wellington: Cuba Street, 11:00
Christchurch: Bridge of Remembrance, 12:00
Dunedin: Otago Museum, 14:00
Hamilton: Hillcrest Stadium Park, 13:30
Palmerston North: The Square, 14:00
Whanganui: Taupo Quay, 10:00
Activists may hold demonstrations in other cities as well. Gatherings are likely at government buildings and public squares. Participation in larger rallies will likely be dozens to a few hundred people.
Security personnel will likely monitor the gatherings. Minor skirmishes between activists and security forces are possible, especially if police forcibly attempt to disperse demonstrators. Activists will march along roadways in some areas. The demonstrations and security response may cause localized transport disruptions.
Advice
Avoid all rallies due to possible violence. If skirmishes break out, leave the area immediately. Follow all security personnel instructions. Allow additional travel time near demonstrations.
