The incident took place at a bar in the village of San Miguel del Ene; although no group has as yet claimed responsibility for the attack, authorities believe the killings to be the work of the rebel organization Shining Path. Investigators at the scene reportedly discovered pamphlets encouraging Peruvians not to vote in the nation's June 6 presidential elections.
