Turkey: Further anti-Israel protests possible through mid-May in cities nationwide /update 1
Anti-Israel protests possible through mid-May in cities across Turkey, particularly Istanbul and Ankara. Avoid all demonstrations.
Event
Large protests denouncing Israel are possible in major cities across Turkey through mid-May in response to clashes between Israeli security forces and Palestinians in Jerusalem and recent Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip. The largest gatherings are likely near the Israeli Embassy in Ankara and the Israeli Consulate General in Istanbul. Protests are also possible outside US diplomatic missions in Istanbul, Ankara, and Adana. Recent demonstrations have involved thousands of participants. Smaller gatherings have also taken place in Erzurum, Kocaeli, Sakarya, Trabzon, and other urban centers. Due to the impromptu nature of the demonstrations, events are rarely well publicized in advance.
Security forces will almost certainly deploy to monitor and facilitate the gatherings, particularly those near diplomatic missions. Clashes between police and activists could occur; authorities may try to break up more disruptive rallies. Localized transport disruptions are likely near well-attended demonstrations. Business disruptions are also possible, especially if violence occurs.
Advice
Avoid all demonstrations. Exercise caution near Israeli and US diplomatic missions. Monitor trusted local news sources, as organizers may not announce protests in advance. Heed the instructions of local security personnel.
