Turkey: Police in Istanbul arrest 18 foreign nationals in counterterrorism raids May 20
Police in Istanbul, Turkey, detain 18 suspected foreign terrorists during raids May 20; further security operations likely in medium term.
Event
Counterterrorism police launched raids against suspected Islamic State (IS) members and supporters across Istanbul May 20. Around 20 addresses were targeted and authorities detained 18 foreign nationals. The operation does not indicate that the suspects were involved in any specific plot, or whether they all have terrorist links; some of the suspects could be released within days.
Turkey faces a moderate terrorist threat from both international Islamist groups as well as from domestic separatists. Further sporadic security operations are therefore likely around the country in the medium term. While most such operations typically end with little violence and minimal disruptions, dangerous exchanges of gunfire cannot be ruled out if officers encounter an operational terror cell or a haven used by organized criminal groups.
Advice
Exercise increased vigilance if operating in Turkey, especially in major cities. Remain alert to the signs of a potential security operation forming if your business schedule requires you to be out and about during the early, predawn hours. Leave the area immediately if security forces appear to be deploying. Report all suspicious activity, people, or objects to the authorities.
