DRC, Rwanda: Transport and utility disruptions continue in Goma and the DRC due to Mount Nyiragongo's ongoing activity, June 1 /update 6

Event

Officials continue to monitor activity at the Mount Nyiragongo volcano, located approximately 14 km (9 miles) north-northeast of Goma, DRC. The initial eruption at Mount Nyiragongo began May 22 and ceased May 24; however, related activity has continued as of June 1, with ash plumes and regular tremors reported. As of May 31, officials with the Goma Volcano Observatory continue to warn the of possibility of an additional eruption. Additional eruptions could cause low-level seismic activity, ash clouds, and landslides in the surrounding area. Related earthquakes have caused infrastructure damage in Goma and surrounding areas, including in Gisenyi in Rwanda.

Initially, the event prompted evacuation orders for ten districts including Majengo, Mabanga Nord, Mabanga Sud, Virunga, Bujovu, Kahembe, Mikeno, Mapendo, Murara, and locations near the volcano. As of June 1, at least thirty-two people have died as a result of the eruption in Buhene, Kibatshi, and Kibumba. Hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced as a result of the ongoing volcanic activity.

Transport and Utilities
Transport disruptions are likely in the surrounding area if a significant eruptive event occurs. Road conditions could quickly deteriorate during periods of significant ashfall, and visibility could be reduced. Officials might close roads near the volcano depending on the presence of hazardous volcanic material. The ferry services linking Goma to Bukavu have also been suspended until further notice. A portion of the RN2 road between Rutshuru and Goma is also closed. All tourist activities at the Virunga National Park have subsequently ceased following the eruption.

Fine particulate matter ejected from the volcano could pose a hazard to flights in the surrounding airspace. As of May 31, Bukavu Airport (BKY) has reopened, but Goma International Airport (GOM) remains closed. Authorities might temporarily close airport facilities if significant ashfall accumulations occur. Red level aviation warnings remain in place around the volcano as of June 1. Additional power and water disruptions are likely, especially as people return and if volcanic activity continues.

Health
Any further volcanic activity may impact air quality in nearby areas. Individuals in the region - especially those with underlying pulmonary conditions such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) - may experience difficulty breathing and suffer from lower tolerance to physical exertion. The impact on the water supply may increase related diseases, such as cholera. As of May 31, over 35 suspected cases of cholera have been reported in Kirotshe.

Advice

Confirm flights if a large eruption occurs. Plan for possible transportation disruptions if operating near Mount Nyiragongo in the coming days. Seek updated information on road conditions before driving; due to reduced visibility, drive cautiously in areas affected by ash. Carry masks or face coverings and observe other precautions to avoid ash inhalation if operating in the affected area.
