Event

A magnitude-5.2 offshore earthquake occurred in the Timor Sea, south of Timor Island, at around 09:56 WITA June 28. The epicenter was approximately 55 km (34 miles) southeast of Kupang, Timor Island, East Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia. The tremor occurred at a depth of around 10 km (6 miles). Weak-to-light shaking may have been felt in Timor and Rote islands in eastern parts of East Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia, as well as Bobonaro, Covalima, and Oecusse municipalities in western Timor-Leste. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Aftershocks are possible over the coming days. The earthquake has not prompted any tsunami warning.

Officials may temporarily shut down transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to check for damage. Minor disruptions could occur during shutdowns, but service will likely resume quickly if no damage is found. Utility outages are possible, particularly near the earthquake's epicenter.

The affected municipalities in Timor-Leste are around 73 km (45 miles) southwest of Dili.
