Indonesia: Further protests likely in Jakarta through late January to demand arrest of former politician over corruption case /update 1

Additional demonstrations likely in Jakarta, Indonesia, through late January to demand arrest of former politician over corruption case.

Informational

Further protests are likely in Jakarta through late January to demand the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) arrest former politician Harun Masiku over a corruption case. Activists from the Taliwang Youth Front Alliance called for a protest at the KPK headquarters and State Palace from 09:00 Jan. 13. Well-attended gatherings will likely draw a few hundred people. Additional unannounced rallies are possible at the KPK headquarters, Parliament building, Presidential Palace, and prominent landmarks such as National Monument and Arjuna Wijaya Statue.

Authorities will probably impose heightened security measures, including cordons and roadblocks, at the KPK headquarters and any areas where protests materialize. Localized transport and business disruptions may occur, particularly if demonstrators occupy nearby roads. Minor clashes are possible, especially if police attempt to disperse demonstrators trying to bypass security barriers. Acts of violence such as arson and vandalism could occur.

Exercise caution if operating near the KPK's headquarters. Avoid any protests due to possible clashes. Plan for possible localized transport and business disruptions during any demonstration. If any violence erupts nearby, immediately depart the area. Heed all official traffic and security advisories.

Harun Masiku, previously a member of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), is accused of bribing former General Election Commission (KPU) Commissioner Wahyu Setiawan to secure a legislative seat. The KPK recently intensified its investigation, naming PDI-P Secretary-General Hasto Kristiyanto a suspect and imposing travel bans on him and former Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna H. Laoly. Previously, on Dec. 23, 2024, a demonstration outside the KPK headquarters in Jakarta escalated into vandalism and stone-throwing, leading to clashes with security forces.
