Indonesia: Activists to protest proposed tax hikes in Yogyakarta City Dec. 30-31
Protests planned in Yogyakarta, Indonesia Dec. 30-31. Heightened security and localized disruptions likely. Skirmishes possible.
The Jogja Calling alliance is protesting in Yogyakarta Dec. 30-31 to denounce an upcoming value-added tax (VAT) hike. Protesters have gathered at the Abu Bakar All Special Parking Lot (TKP) in Suryatmajan on the afternoon of Dec. 30 and will rally outside the DIY Tax Office along North Ringroad in Sleman from 09:00 Dec. 31. Additional unannounced rallies are possible near tax offices and other government buildings. Several hundred people may join the action.
Heightened security is likely. Police may forcibly disperse any overly disruptive crowds, potentially prompting skirmishes. Demonstrators will likely march along or block roadways, causing localized traffic disruptions. Local businesses may face some interruptions in case of any significant clashes and related security responses.
Avoid protest sites as a security precaution. If clashes break out, leave the area for a secure, non-governmental building. Allow additional travel time near gathering sites. Account for possible business disruptions. Follow all security and traffic advisories.
