South Korea: Unionized delivery workers continuing indefinite strike nationwide as of June 16 /update 1
Unionized delivery workers maintaining indefinite strike across South Korea as of June 16. Delivery delays, protests likely.
Event
Unionized delivery workers continue to stage a nationwide strike to protest working conditions in the private sector. The Parcel Delivery Workers' Solidarity Union claims private delivery companies have not fulfilled their obligations under a deal reached in January on package sorting. Approximately 2,100 unionized delivery workers are participating in the work stoppage. Several thousand unionized workers plan to delay work by two hours each morning. Additionally, workers employed by state-run Korea Post may also support the strike, possibly by refusing to deliver packages unless they are presorted.
Delivery service delays are likely for the duration of the labor action. Intensified disruptions are possible if Korea Post workers begin labor actions. Lingering disruptions may continue beyond the end of the strike as service providers work to resolve their backlogs.
Protests are likely during the strike. Workers have been staging demonstrations with increasing frequency since the strike began. Korea Post workers staged a sit-in at the company's headquarters in Seoul, while nearly 4,000 unionized workers gathered in Yeouido Park June 15-16. Protests are most likely near distribution centers, company offices, and government buildings. While protests probably will not become severely disruptive, localized traffic delays are possible.
Advice
Confirm delivery schedules for the duration of the work stoppage. Consider using alternative carriers if concerned about time-sensitive deliveries.
