Unidentified gunmen kill ten people in Niha-Mossi, Centre-North region, Burkina Faso, July 11. Further attacks almost certain.

Unidentified gunmen killed ten people, including seven members of the civil defense forces, in an attack on the village of Niha-Mossi, Pensa commune, in Centre-Nord Region, July 11. The assailants also reportedly looted the area and burned the market. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the assault. A security operation is reportedly ongoing in the area.
Similar attacks are almost certain to occur in Centre-Nord Region over the medium term.
Context
The raid underscores the severe insecurity and risk of militant attacks across much of Burkina Faso. Islamist militants operating in the tri-border area (i.e., near the shared borders of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso) continue to perpetrate similar attacks and are usually the primary suspects. Armed bandits have also contributed to the deteriorating security environment.
