Former President calls for rally at Stade Pater in Papeete, French Polynesia, July 17. Increased security likely; disruptions possible.

Informational

Event

Former President Oscar Temaru has called for a protest at Stade Pater in the Pirae area of Papeete July 17 to commemorate the anniversary of French nuclear weapons tests held in 1974. Participants intend to denounce the tests’ alleged contamination of Tahiti as well as politicians’ complicity in the tests. Organizers have not announced a starting time for the demonstration. Participation in the gathering is unclear, though attendance will likely be between a few dozen and a couple hundred people.

Security personnel will likely monitor the gathering and may try to disperse the demonstration if it is especially disruptive. Minor skirmishes between police and demonstrators cannot be ruled out. Activists may march along nearby roadways, causing localized transport disruptions.

Advice

Avoid the demonstration due to possible skirmishes. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately. Follow all security personnel instructions. Allow additional travel time near the rally.
