Ghana: Youth activists to protest in Accra, July 6

Youth activists affiliated with the NDC to protest in Accra, Ghana, July 6. Increased security and transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Youth activists affiliated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) opposition party plan to protest in several locations in Accra from 08:00, July 6, to denounce alleged police brutality. The starting points include the Accra business district and the Madina, Osu, and Lapaz neighborhoods. All participants will then meet at the Jubilee House (also called the Flagstaff House). The protest is due to end at 12:00. Authorities did not formally forbid the demonstration but said that they would not be able to provide security along the protest routes.

Heightened security and transportation disruptions are likely along the march routes and in the vicinity of the Jubilee House. Clashes with security forces or rival activists cannot be ruled out as violence has occurred at similar events in the past.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations and large concentrations of police and consider alternate routes to avoid protest routes and locations. Heed the instructions of local authorities. Depart the area at the first sign of a confrontation.
