Lebanon: Unionized pharmacists to strike nationwide from July 16
Unionized pharmacists to launch an indefinite nationwide strike in Lebanon from July 16; associated protests possible.
Event
Unionized pharmacists plan to launch an indefinite nationwide strike in Lebanon from July 16. The purpose of the labor action is to denounce supply shortages of essential medicines; pharmacists allege that the shortages result from the government's failure to make payment to foreign pharmaceuticals suppliers as part of a subsidy program.
The work stoppage will likely affect non-emergency medical services for the duration of the strike. Striking pharmacists may also hold demonstrations outside public hospitals. Gatherings outside the Ministry of Health in Beirut are also possible. Localized traffic disruptions are possible near any protests that may materialize.
Advice
Ensure sufficient supplies of essential medicines. Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution; exercise caution around government buildings, prominent public parks and squares, and other popular rally sites. Allow additional time for travel near likely gathering locations.
