Authorities in Madagascar state, July 21, that they arrested several people over an alleged attempt to assassinate the president and others.

Officials may increase security near prominent state and government buildings and residences of senior state officials through late July following an alleged plot to assassinate President Andry Rajoelina and several other people. Officials issued a statement on July 21 noting that several local and foreign nationals, including two French nationals, had been arrested in connection with the plot. The French nationals were arrested July 20. The nature or extent of the plot remains unclear.
Officials could deploy additional personnel to and establish checkpoints at state facilities and residences of prominent political figures. Authorities may also seek to disrupt opposition political events or increase surveillance of persons suspected of involvement in the plot. Any security deployment could increase the possibility of localized ground travel disruptions.
