Peru: Further protests over disputed election result likely nationwide through late July /update 2
Additional protests linked to the disputed outcome of the June presidential run-off election likely across Peru through late July.
Event
Protests related to the June 6 presidential election between Pedro Castillo of the Free Peru (Peru Libre) party and Keiko Fujimori of the Popular Force (Fuerza Popular) party are likely to persist in Lima and possibly other urban centers through late July. Castillo received just over 50 percent of the vote; however, Fujimori has disputed the outcome, claiming electoral fraud. The National Jury of Elections (Jurado Nacional de Elecciones, JNE) is currently reviewing Fujimori's appeals and has indicated that its investigations will likely conclude during the week of July 18-24. Protests will probably occur in the run-up and immediate aftermath of the JNE's decision and on Inauguration Day July 28.
In Lima, protests are especially likely near the headquarters of the JNE at the intersection of Avenida Nicolas de Pierola - widely known as Colmena - and Jiron Lampa. Demonstrations are also likely near the Plaza Mayor, also known as the Plaza de Armas. Police have deployed heavily across central Lima following significant unrest at these locations July 14.
Elsewhere in Peru, protests are possible in major plazas and near government buildings, especially in cities such as Arequipa and Cusco.
Security forces will almost certainly continue to deploy to monitor related gatherings and conduct a major security operation in Lima July 28. Ground transport disruptions are likely near any demonstrations. Clashes between protesters and security forces or between rival political party supporters remain possible.
Advice
Liaise with trusted contacts and monitor local political and protest-related developments. Exercise caution near likely gathering sites and allow additional time to reach destinations in major cities. Avoid all demonstrations due to possible clashes.
