Russia: Bridge collapse prompts service disruptions to Trans-Siberian Railway July 23

Rail services suspended on Trans-Siberian Railway, Russia, July 23, following bridge collapse; service disruptions possible in coming days.

Warning

Event

Authorities have suspended rail traffic in both directions on the Trans-Siberian Railway as of July 23 after a railway bridge in Transbaikalia collapsed following heavy rains. The bridge, which is located in the Sretensky District near the village of Nizhnyaya Kuenga, approximately 250 km (155 miles) east of Chita, collapsed at around 09:00 local time. It is unclear when services will resume.

Authorities have warned of disruptions to passenger services between Samara and Vladivostok. There are few alternative routes and congestion is highly likely on any parallel lines that do operate. Disruption to passenger and freight services is likely even after services resume as operators work to clear the service backlog and reposition rolling stock.

Advice

Check service status before travel and allow additional time for travel of freight shipments if planning to use the Trans-Siberian Railway in the coming days.
