Turkey: Flood-related disruptions ongoing in eastern regions, July 22

Disruption ongoing in eastern Turkey July 22 following flooding; overland transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Flood-related disruptions are ongoing in eastern Turkey as of July 22 following heavy rains. Widespread flooding has been reported in the provinces of Artvin and Rize. Overland transport disruptions and localized evacuations are ongoing in affected areas, particularly in Ardesen, Arhavi, and Findikli. Minor landslides have been reported in Ardesen and Tunca. Some sections of the Black Sea coastal road (D010) are currently impassable. Electricity and internet outages have been reported in some areas.

Disruptions could persist for several days until the waters recede and structural repairs can be made. Floodwaters and debris flows could render bridges or roadways impassable, impacting overland travel in and around affected areas. Ponding on road surfaces could cause hazardous driving conditions on regional highways. Authorities could temporarily close some low-lying routes that become inundated by floodwaters. Flooding could block regional rail lines; freight and passenger train delays and cancellations are possible in areas that see heavy rainfall and potential track inundation. Localized business disruptions are likely in low-lying areas; some businesses might not operate at full capacity because of flood damage to facilities, possible evacuations, and some employees' inability to reach work sites.

Advice

Check route and public transport status before travel. Confirm all transport reservations and business appointments. Allow extra time for travel in the affected area and plan alternative routes if necessary. Do not drive on flooded roads. Keep battery-powered items fully charged where possible.
