Security operations are ongoing in Markoye Department, Sahel Region, as of early Aug. 6 following a series of raids by unidentified gunmen on the villages of Dembam, Guevara, and Takabougou. According to military officials, ground and air units are conducting a counteroffensive to find the assailants. Authorities confirmed Aug. 5 that the attackers killed at least 15 soldiers, 11 civilians, and four volunteer militia members during the raids on the previous day. The gunmen also burned several properties. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Heightened security, including checkpoints and roadblocks, are likely in the area over the coming days. Similar attacks are likely in Sahel Region over the medium term.

The villages are located about 78 km (48 miles) northwest of Dori.

Context

The raids underscore the severe insecurity and risk of militant attacks across much of Burkina Faso. Islamist militants operating in the tri-border area (i.e., near the shared borders of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso) continue to perpetrate similar attacks and are usually the primary suspects. Armed bandits have also contributed to the deteriorating security environment.
