Unidentified attackers reportedly kidnapped three Chinese nationals from a mining area near Itendey village, Ituri Province, Aug. 15. Officials claim militants affiliated with the Cooperative for the Development of Congo (CODECO) may be responsible for the abductions.

Heightened security is likely to continue over the coming days. Authorities stated that search operations are ongoing in the area. Clashes between security forces and armed individuals cannot be ruled out.

Itendey is approximately 24 km (15 miles) northwest of Bunia.

Context

The threat of militant violence remains severe in the northern and eastern regions of the DRC. High fatality attacks conducted by some of the multitudes of armed groups who operate in the area have been regularly reported in recent months. Militants usually make use of extreme and indiscriminate violence and foreign travelers are likely to be the targets of violent robberies and abductions due to the perception of wealth and vulnerability.

Avoid the affected areas until security improves. If operating in the province, maintain regular contact with your diplomatic mission, travel only in convoy, and avoid all travel after dark. Confirm that a thorough communication plan exists to ensure rapid accountability for all personnel operating in the DRC.
