Warning

Event

Activists, affiliated with several unions and organizations, including the Workers' United Front (Frente Unitario de Trabajdores, FUT) and the Ecuador Federation of University Students (Federacion de Estudiantes Universitarios de Ecuador, FEUE), plan to hold nationwide demonstrations Aug. 11. Protesters are demanding that the government regulates the price of fuel, and the Constitutional Court declares certain educational reforms to be unconstitutional.

The main protest will take place in Quito from 16:00. Protesters will march from the offices of the Social Security Institute of Ecuador, along Avenida 10 de Agosto, to the Carondelet Palace, the seat of the national government. In Guayaquil, protesters plan to gather at Parque Centenario, starting at 16:00. Protests are likely in other areas of the country, especially in Cuenca, Santo Domingo and Machala.

Transport and business disruptions are likely near the protest sites, with associated heightened security in the vicinity. Clashes between protesters and security personnel is unlikely, but cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid all protests as a precaution. Allow additional time to reach your destination if operating in Quito or another major city in Ecuador, Aug. 11. Do not attempt to cross any roadblocks; wait for police to reopen the roads or look for alternative routes.
