Civil society activists affiliated with the "Wetaya" and "Fixourcountry" movements plan to stage a protest in Accra from 07:00, Aug. 4. Participants will gather at the Obra Spot, Kwame Nkrumah Circle, to denounce the country's currency depreciation. Protesters may march to notable locations such as the presidential palace, also known as Jubilee House.
It is unclear if authorities formally sanctioned the demonstration. Authorities have banned previous protest actions due to COVID-19 restrictions, increasing the potential for clashes with security forces or rival activists. Such clashes cannot be ruled out as violence has occurred at similar events in the past. Heightened security and transportation disruptions are likely along the march route.
