Iraq: Power outages reported in Nineveh Governorate following an attack on electricity transmission tower Aug. 8

Power outages reported in Nineveh Governorate, Iraq, after attack on electricity transmission tower Aug. 8; consequent disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

A bomb attack targeting an electricity transmission tower has reportedly caused power outages in areas across northern Iraq's Nineveh Governorate as of late Aug. 8. The extent of the damage to the transmission tower remains unclear. Authorities did not immediately confirm when power would be restored to affected areas. The Iraqi government has blamed the Islamic State (IS) for similar attacks on electricity transmission towers in northern Iraq in recent weeks.

Commercial and communications disruptions are almost certain in Mosul and other affected areas of Nineveh Governorate over the coming hours; outages may impact cellular and mobile services. Some essential services, such as banking and fuel stations, may also be affected. Blackouts could adversely affect security protocols, including alarm systems and electronic fences; opportunistic criminal activity could increase during electricity outages. Road travel delays are possible in areas affected by the power outages due to possible nonfunctional or malfunctioning traffic lights.

Context

Despite Baghdad's efforts to crack down on IS, the group still poses a significant threat and will likely remain a potent force for the foreseeable future. While IS was territorially defeated in Iraq in December 2017, the militant group maintains cells throughout western and northern Iraq, which are well equipped, highly mobile, and likely retain the support of marginalized Sunni communities in the region.

Advice

Charge mobile and communication devices and ensure backup batteries are available. Plan for road travel delays due to possible malfunctioning or nonfunctional traffic lights in affected areas. Exercise caution when driving in recently impacted areas. Confirm business appointments. Verify that security systems are working. Park vehicles in secure areas, and complete ground movements before nightfall. Ensure that generators are functional and refuel devices where necessary.
