Iraq: Protest reported in Nasiriyah late Aug. 13

Demonstration demanding the release of activists reported in Nasiriyah, Dhi Qar Governorate, Iraq, as of late Aug. 13; clashes possible.

Warning

Event

A demonstration has materialized on Ibrahim Al-Khalil Highway in Nasiriyah, Dhi Qar Governorate, as of late Aug. 13. The purpose of the action is to demand the release of activists detained by security forces. Protesters have reportedly blocked the thoroughfare with burning tires. If the demonstration persists, it could spread to Dhi Qar Governorate headquarters, which has been a common protest site in recent weeks.

Authorities will almost certainly maintain a heightened security posture throughout Nasiriyah, including around Dhi Qar Governorate headquarters and other governmental buildings, until the situation stabilizes. Localized transport disruptions are likely in the area through at least Aug. 13. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces are possible over the coming hours.

Advice

Avoid all protests as a routine precaution. Heed the advice of security personnel. Leave immediately and take refuge in a secure, non-governmental building if violence erupts. Allow additional time to reach destinations near affected areas Aug. 13.
