Activists plan to protest throughout central Beirut Aug. 4 to demand justice for victims of the Beirut port explosion on what is the first anniversary of the blast. Protest organizers have announced three marches beginning at 15:30 from Sassine Square, the Beirut Fire Brigade headquarters in Karantina, and Saint George's Bay. The marches will converge at the Lebanese Immigrant Statue, located at the Port of Beirut, at 17:00 prior to marching toward the Parliament building at 18:30.

Protesters have blocked roads and clashed with security forces during previous rallies. The marches will likely be well attended. The demonstrations come amid criticism of Lebanese politicians for allegedly obstructing the investigation into the August 2020 blast that killed at least 200 people and wounded some 6,000 others.

Authorities will almost certainly increase security to monitor the protest. Localized transport disruptions are likely in the surrounding area. Clashes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out, particularly if demonstrators are overly disruptive or if they ignore police orders to disperse.
